First Sound
RHYTHM - why does it move us? - What makes us sway in time to pulses and cycles?
In the first waking moments of our consciousness at 27 weeks, as an embryo our ears would have come alive to hear their first sound and, from within the womb, that which we heard  was the deep pulsating of the Heart.

This is a powerful journey through the world of the drum which has captivated Walsh from an early age. Driven to create a new style of percussion performance Ben is best known for his ability to fuse many different styles together creatively,re-inventing new aproaches to ancient formulas of rhythm and sound constantly finding new audiences and progressing. In his latest work Ben delivers his unique drumming style with razor sharp precision primarily using instruments that he has designed and built himself.

An hour of the most pumping beats and primal pulsations in ways you never thought possible. Ben moves his body every which way imaginable to create a visual/aural arena of rhythmic mayhem where his skills and music can be equally shared by the audience. He does this across an array of drums and percussive instruments that represent the many varied forms of drumming in which he has trained and the also the new forms which he is pioneering. Intergrating technology, he has created a virtual percussive soundscore to support his energetic live drumming performance, bringing a modern edge to an ancient artform. Quoted as being a " one man orchestra" his high energy performance will leave you breathless, as he shares with you themost passionate and skillfull feats of drumming  capable from a single HUMAN.

if  the beat of a drum moves you, and you love the language of rhythm, then don't miss "FIRST SOUND"

“ When a performer walks onto a stage every move we make is theatre, every sound we make is music from a walk to the raising of my sticks we have the attention of the audience with every second. In my joy of playing, in my insular moment I want the audience to be also be encapsulated into that moment. If there is that perfect balance of those two elements then it is a beautiful shape that I will endeavour to create..” Ben Walsh

Human in the Audiosphere
(Where sounds create imagery - and stories are told through the beat of a drum)

Created in 2000 for the Adelaide and Melbourne Fringe Festivals. Awarded the prestigious award for the "Best Musical Act" at the Melbourne Fringe Festival. After receiving a commission from 'The Studio' at the Sydney Opera House, Ben performed the final version over a two week season in October 2001 as part of the Sensoh Festival.

Score: 9/10
Short Review: PerfectPercussion
One-third of Pablo Percusso (a huge hit at the 1998 Fringe), Ben Walsh, thundered out a superb percussive set in front of a packed house at the Rhino Room (prolly not the most ideal venue for this, but adequate nonetheless). On a tiny stage packed with things to hit (both conventional and not), Walsh's live percussion was accompanied by backing tapes (bass, on the whole, with some less complex percussion as well) and a projected visual presentation. It all managed to converge wonderfully. Walsh's hands were a blur for most of the performance, and the rhythms he created were nothing short of incredible. This was a top-notch performance.
(There was also a Human in the Audiosphere CD available at the venue... highly recommended!)

This show was about exploring the dynamics of human interaction with technology. Fusing the beauty of traditional percussive styles from around the globe with modern beat-driven computer generated sounds, to create a world of audio art. Quadraphonic sound and integrated visuals combined to form the AudioSphere. A realm where various Human characters, represented through different drumming styles, took the audience on a highly charged and energetic dance through the soundscapes where live met electronic in an aural art experience.

The video clip created by David Walsh in the player includes an animated sequence wherein the 'businessman' attempts to realise a dream of freedom. The backing track 'Pyramid' was composed by Ben.
